Executive Summary

This data report is designed to meet the reporting requirements of the Center for Disease Control's Uniform Data Set. The Uniform Data Set is intended to track use of funds under the Rape Prevention Education Program. These data are not intended to provide accurate incidence data and are only reported for those activities for which agencies are funded.

Table 1 summarizes the activities for which organizations have been funded. Table 2 summarizes the Uniform Data Set Items as presented in Tables 3 through 8 (Number of forcible rapes reported to the Uniform Crime Report program, number of elementary and secondary school personnel trained, number of children attending rape prevention education, number of people attending rape prevention education, number of professionals trained, and number of rape hotline calls received). Data Sources appear in Table 9.

The data items reported are a compilation of information reported to the investigators by the data sources and as such is subject to the following disclaimers:

· Definitions
Definitions are not necessarily consistent across sources.

· Quality
The quality of the data reported by sources is questionable. Information reported to these investigators is not
necessarily the same as that reported to other organizations by these sources.

· Availability
Some information is not available because the sources could not or did not provide it. All of the numbers reported in the summary table are to some extent affected by missing data. Those interested in interpreting these data items are  urged to pay close attention to the individual tables and to take the non-availability of data into account when attempting to draw conclusion.

· Duplication
Police data are unduplicated because reports are separated by precinct. However, duplication of cases may occur and is particularly likely among certain service providers. Women may seek multiple services following a victimization and there is currently no way to track individuals either within or across providers.

· Validity
Both genders and all ages may be included in the data items. Gender and age are not consistently disaggregated by data sources. Where known, the gender and age compositions of the data items are noted in the individual tables.

Note: This table represents the funding status of all programs funded by the Rape Prevention Education Program.
Rape Prevention Education Program funded activities are represented as 1 = Educating Children, 2 = Educating Adults, 3 = Training Professionals, 4 = Hotline, 5 = Linked Services. Years refer to funding cycles rather than calendar years. Deadlines for Year 2 deliverables may overlap with deadlines for Year 1 and/or Year 3 deliverables. Data for 1996-1997 in this report was collected from organizations funded in Years 1 and 2, but does not include data previously reported in the 1995-96 Violent and Abusive Behavior Data. The source of data for 1994-1995 and 1995-1996 was the 1995-96 Violent and Abusive Behavior Data.

Note: The source for the data for 1996 and 1/1/97 - 5/31/97 is the Arizona Department of Public Safety's Uniform Crime Reports Office. Because the most current data available is only through May, an estimate for the entire year based on the available data is provided. Given that X = 1/1/97 to 5/31/97 data, the formula used for the estimate is: 1997 estimate = X + 9/7 X.
Critiques of police data are not repeated here. They were provided with the 1995-96 Violent and Abusive Behavior Data and the Plan for an Annual Violent and Abusive Behavior Data Report.
